David McFerrin, Baritone

Praised by The Miami Herald for his “commanding stage presence and a voice of seductive beauty,” baritone David McFerrin is active in a wide variety of musical genres.

Mr. McFerrin is a mainstay of the Boston opera scene, and has sung on many other leading stages in the US and Europe. A former Emerging Artist with Boston Lyric Opera, he has performed numerous roles with the company, including King Mark in Martin’sThe Love Potion, Pallante in Handel’s Agrippina, and the Officer in Glass’ gripping two- character drama In the Penal Colony. Last season he created the role of Dr. Ferguson in BLO’s world premiere of Julian Grant’s The Nefarious, Immoral but Highly Profitable Enterprise of Mr. Burke & Mr. Hare. This season he rejoins the company as Junius in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia, and sings Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society, Neptune in Caccini’s Alcina with Boston Early Music Festival, and Agamemnon in Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène with Odyssey Opera. Past opera credits include Florida Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, and the Rossini Festival in Wildbad, Germany.
Mr. McFerrin’s solo concert engagements have ranged from Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice to Holiday Pops with the Boston Pops. He has sung with the Cleveland Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony, and San Antonio Symphony. He has received particular acclaim for performances of baroque repertoire with ensembles including Handel and Haydn Society, American Bach Soloists, Apollo’s Fire, and Arion Baroque Orchestra. He is also a member of the renaissance vocal ensemble Blue Heron, whose recent recording of 16th-century English polyphony won the 2018 Gramophone award for Best Early Music Album.
Mr. McFerrin holds degrees from Carleton College, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and the Juilliard School. He lives in the Boston neighborhood of Roslindale with his wife Erin, a preservationist with the Massachusetts Historical Commission, their newborn daughter Fiona, and black lab Holly.
